Ecology in Dubrovnik

In 1929, George Bernard Shaw, the famous Irish writer wrote :
“Those who want to see heaven on earth should come to Dubrovnik.”

His unforgettable words don’t only praise the rich and glorious history of Dubrovnik, but also the natural features of the whole region, known today as the Dubrovnik-Neretva county. Few places on earth exhibit such harmony between nature and men, a harmony still saved till today. From the clear Adriatic waters, the interiours karst system, to the rich Neretva river in the Northeast, an impressive combination appears, taking your breath away every time you visit this area.

The definitive characteristics of the landscape are the evergreen flora, pine and oak forests, macchia, karst fields, all creating the attractive tropical and sub-tropical vegetation in Dubrovnik area. Many natural phenomena can be discovered ; Europe’s longest underground river Ombla, the bay of Mali Ston famous for oyster beds, the national park on the Island of Mljet, nursery Trsteno, Lokrum Reservation, Konavle, the Elafiti Islands and a lot more. The real joy is to explore this region by yourself, finding your own secret spots of harmony and peace.
The Neretva river reigns over the views in the hinterland of South Dalmatia. This is generally a marshland area, with occasional limestone areas. Shallow riverboats characteristic of the region glide up and back down the river, and there are unlimited fields all around where people grow a variety of produce. The Neretva is the environment of one of the biggest species of trout-the marble trout, which can weigh more than thirty kilograms.Near the mouth of the Neretva, there is a unusual bay called Malostonski zaljev, where the sea is not unusual in different kinds of shellfish.

On the road to Dubrovnik to the south, lies the Trsteno nursery, one of the oldest designed parks in Croatia dating from the 16th century. The park has many exotic plant species grow in. Rijeka dubrovacka is the place of a harmonious coexistence between the villas of Dubrovnik aristocracy and the natural environment.
Other examples are found on the Elafiti Islands ( Kolocep, Lopud, ipan, Jakljan, and Olipa ), Island Lokrum and other islands off the coast of Dubrovnik. As the many villas show, these wooded small islands have been a pleasant retreat for centuries. Similary wooded are the islands of Lastovo and Mljet. One 3rd of Mljet and a part of its sea are in the limits of the national’s Park Mljet. The special and magical beauty of Mljet led many to recognise Mljet as Homer’s lost island Ogygia, the place where Ulysses and the nymph Calypso met. Amongall this natural beauty, there are two significant monuments : the ruins of a late-antiquity palace in Polace, and the previous Benedictine monastery on an islet in in the lake of Veliko jezero in the middle of Mljet National Park.
The results of the sea water analysis, made in the standards prescribed by the EU Union, show that Adriatic Sea is of the highest quality, the only exception being one or two major seaports. Along Dubrovnik area visitors will enjoy in the crystal clear sea and healthier environment. The only exemption where swimming is n’t recommended are the port of Gruz and the Old town. Due to many ships and sewage water the sea quality in those areas must be improved before swimming can be recommended. The control measurements of the sea water quality around Dubrovnik is done annually before the tourist season. Unfortunately, there aren’t beaches around Dubrovnik that have yet received the Blue Flag award, a western european award that recognizes beaches with high standards regarding both sea water quality and supporting facilities. The only received Blue Flags in Dubrovnik region are held by the ACI marina Miho Pracat in Komolac, six km from Dubrovnik and the ACI marina on Korcula. When you see all these beauties you will wish to have some Croatia real estate
Drinking water in Dubrovnik is of excellent quality, continualy controlled, and comes typically from the Ombla river, five km from Dubrovnik. Don’t miss the opportunity to refresh yourself at the Big and small Onofrio fountains in the Old town of Dubrovnik, the enormous Onoffrio fountain is located at the entrance, straight after Pile gate.

HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT DUBROVNIK

Dubrovnik was founded in the first half of the 7th century by a group of refugees from Epidaurum. They established their settlement at the island and named it Laus. Opposite of that location, at the foot of Sr273 ; Mountain, Slavs developed their own settlement using the name of Dubrovnik ( named by “Dub” – sort of wood ). The settlements were separated by a channel which was filled in 12th century, present Placa or Stradun, and since than the two settlements have been united. At that time the town walls started to be built as a protection from different enemies ( Arabs, Venetian, Macedonians, Serbs, etc., who wanted to conquer Dubrovnik.
The Republican Constitution of Dubrovnik was strictly aristocratic. The population was divided into three classes : nobility, voters, and workmen or plebeians. All effective power was concentrated in the hands of nobility. The voters were permitted to hold only minor offices, while plebeians had no voice in government.
Marriage between members of different classes of the society was forbidden. The executive bodies were the Grand Council (ultimate ruling body ) and the small Council ( executive power ) ( from 1238. ) and
the Senate ( from 1253 ). The head of the state was the Duke, elected for a term of office for one month. Grand Council consisted of completely members of the aristocracy ; every noble took his seat at the age of eighteen.
Small Council consisted first of eleven members and after 1667 of seven. The Small Council got voted in by the Knez or Rector.
The Senate was added in 1235 as a consultative body. It consisted of forty five invited members ( over forty years of age). While the Republic was under the rule of Venice the Rector was Venetian, but after 1358 the Rector was always a Ragusan.
Thelength of the Rector’s service was just one month and somebody was eligible for reelection after two years. The rector lived and worked in Rector’s Palace but his family stayed living in their own house.
The government of the Republic was liberal in personality and early showed its concern for justice and humanitarian beliefs, e.g. Slave trading was abolished since 1418.

In 1809 Dubrovnik become part of the Ilyrian Provinces. In 1815, by the resolution of Vienna Congress, Dubrovnik was annexed to Austria ( later Austria-Hungary ), and remained annexed until 1918 when it became part of the kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. In 1929 the kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes became the kingdom of Yugoslavia and was divided into eight districts. Until 1939 Dubrovnik was part of Zetska district and then was included in Banovina of Croatia. At the beginning of the World War II Dubrovnik was first part of the Independent State of Croatia. From Apri 1941 until September 1943 Dubrovnik was occupied by the Italian military and after that this was occupied by Germans.

In October 1944 Partisans liberatedDubrovnik from the Germans. In 1945 Dubrovnik became part of the

Federative People’s Republic of Yugoslavia. In 1963 the Federative People’s Republic of Yugoslavia changed its name into Socialist Fed. Republic of Yugoslavia and was consisting of 6 republics. Dubrovnik was part of the Socialistic Republic of Croatia. In 1990 the republics of the Socialistic Fed. Republic of Yugoslavia reached their autonomy. The Socialistic Republic of Croatia was renamed into Republic of Croatia.

At october 1, 1991 Dubrovnik was cruelly attacked by the Serbo-Montenegrin military. The Serbo-Montenegrin siege of Dubrovnik lasted for 7 months, and in May 1992 the Croatian army liberated Dubrovnik and its environment, but the risk of Serbo -Montenegrin unexpected attacks lasted for another 3 years. Today, Dubrovnik is a free and safe town, worldly known, and the most popular tourist destination in Croatia.
The today’s name of Dubrovnik comes from the Croatian word Dubrava, which means oak woods as, in the past,
oak trees surrounded Dubrovnik. The Latin name Ragusa -Rausa, in use until the 15th century, originated from
the rock ( lat. Lausa – meaning rock ) where the 1st settlement was established.
As it had good relations with its neighbors, Dubrovnik was allowed to trade, trading both in the Orient and the Mediterranean. With many nations and towns it had special agreements and was not paying taxes on products sold or transported trough some country’s. During several centuries Dubrovnik grew into the most powerful economic center in the south of the Adriatic and it developed a powerful fleet of merchant and war ships. Dubrovnik had over 2 hundred merchant ships called Argosy.

Franciscan Monastery

Franciscan Monastery is built in the transitional Romanesque-Gothic style. The construction started in 1337. In 1667 it was completely destroyed in the Great Earthquake. The door with Pieta at Stradun is the only thing left from the original church after it has been rebuilt. The Cluster of the Franciscan Monastery is considered to be a masterpiece of architecture in Dubrovnik. It was built in Romanesque-Gothic style by the famous Mihoje Brajkov from Bara. The capitals are a true example of Romanesque style, with bestiary motives bringing the spirit of Gothic as well.

Pieta at the church of Male braèe – gothic sculpture done by Leonard and Petar Petroviæ (1498). The lofty interior of the monastery (reputed once to have had ceiling paintings by Titian) was reconstructed after the Great Earthquake of 1667.

The Old Pharmacy, located inside the Franciscan monastery, was opened in 1317. It is the third oldest pharmacy in Europe, but the only one still working. The inventories, ceramics, bowls, laboratory equipment and old medical books of the old Pharmacy are kept in the Franciscan Monastery Museum, among other highly valued and priceless objects of Dubrovnik’s historic and cultural past.

The Franciscan monastery’s library possesses 30,000 volumes, 22 incunabula, 1,500 valuable handwritten documents. The well-labeled exhibits include a 15th century silver-gilt cross and silver thurible, an 18th century crucifix from Jerusalem in mother-of-pearl on olive wood, an martyrology (1541) by Bemardin Gucetiæ (Gozze) and illuminated Psalters.

Among the pictures is one of Ruðer Boškoviæ painted in London in 1760, and a painting showing the town before the earthquake. This painting is one of the very few ones that show the Old Town before the earthquake and is used to reconstruct and understand how Dubrovnik was build before the catastrophe in 1667.

Situated in the Old City portion of Dubrovnik, this Franciscan church dates back to the 14th century and still retains many of its original features. Of interest to visitors is the attractive reading room with its collection of ancient manuscripts as well as the equally beautiful library, which boasts a few famous scholars and academics among its users over the years. A museum housed within the monastery is dedicated to providing information about the old pharmacy that was a feature of the monastery as far back as 1317. Put yourself in a relax-mode

Look at a pet when it’s resting. Its body is completely free of tension, its brain switched off and the whole body has gone into a kind of peace-mode. It is too bad that many human beeings have lost the ability to do this, because they live stressful lives. So here is some help to relearn it.

Not everbody has time or money to travel somewhere when you need a break. Of course, a vacation at a beautiful place like Dubrovnik in Croatia helps to calm down, but there are also other ways to put yourself in a relax mode.
Planned relaxation minimize anxiety and helps your body and mind to recover from daily rush and stress. Music, a long bath with a fragrant bath salt, or a walk in the park work wonders for some people, but for others it is not that easy. If you feel you can’t learn to relax without someones help, try a relaxation or meditation class. Ask your GP, or search at your local library or internet for informations about these.
Here’s an example:

1.You need a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted.
2.Do a few gentle stretching exercises at the beginning.
3.Make yourself comfortable, no matter what postition, sitting or lying down.
4.Close your eyes, breathe slowly and deeply, in a calm and facile way.
5.Gently tense and then relax each part of your body. Start with your feet and work up to your face and head.
6.Think of warmth, heaviness and relaxation after you’ve focused on each part of your body.
7.Push all distracting thoughts aside, imagine them floating far away.
8.Don’t try too hard to relax; just let the tension in your muscles go and allow them to become relaxed.
9.Let your mind become empty. Many people find it helpful to visualise a calm, peaceful and beautiful place such as a garden, meadow or a beach with palms.
10.Stay like this for around 20 minutes. Then take a few deep breaths and open your eyes, but stay in you position (sitting or lying) for a few moments before you get up.

The example which is offered here is a ‘quick fix’. You can use it in two different ways: to fight a crisis in its early stages or use as a reload two or three times a day.
But it’s best to make time to practise a more thorough exercise on a regular basis. By the way, some Dubrovnik hotel offer very good wellness and massage treatments which can help to relax.

This 10-step exercise can be used even at your desk. If you’re working in an open-plan office it may not be that easy for you to loosen tight clothing and close your eyes. But don’t worry, just loosen what you can, and focus your attention on an object next to you, something on your desk or screen instead.
You could try to focus on a screensaver of a restful image. Relaxation is definitely one of the most helpful self-help activities for mental health and preventive measure against the development of stress and anxiety.
Relaxation exercises can be divided into two main categories: one is for the body and the other for the mind. Exercises for the body also have an effect on the mind. Having a relaxed body may not stop a continuous flow of anxiety-inducing thoughts, but it is a good basis for getting some control of them.
If you want to get best results try to combine both techniques. So have a good and relaxed time at beautiful places like Dubrovnik or just relax and feel good at home, both will help you to feel better.

Wine Tasting Tour

Have you ever take part in wine tasting? If your answer is “no” we recommend to do it, if your answer is “yes”, our recommandation is: go on. Ok, so what do we know about wine tastings…Wine tasting is neither a sport and nor a hobby… It is an experience. Many people choose a wine tasting tour as a modern way to spend their holidays, as these tours usually include going to the country side, where one can enjoy ambience, relaxation and good company. This tends to be a physically and mentally rejuvenating cure. Depending on the continent and country, wine tasting tours are sometimes located on the most beautiful beaches, then other times inland and in hills offering an amazing landscape. Dubrovnik is a famous place for wine tasting tours.
You might think that full appraisal of a wine tasting tour will benefit only true wine lovers, but you can be sure that after a third glass of wine we can most certainly conclude, that everybody will become integrated and feel great. It is better to start with local wine tours and when you get the feeling “that`s right up my alley” build up to wine tasting vacations in more distant territories.
The best for wine tasting beginners is to take a guided tour to places where wineries are located. These tours usually include well-known wineries and guided wine tasting sessions hosted by wine experts. These guided sessions can be an exceptional eye opener for newcomers, but also for the experienced wine enthusiast. You can taste a wide variety of wines at the places where they are manufactured. And you can also learn much about wine making, storage, food matching and also about history of the wine and the local history.
One more, very good thing is that beside the wine there is also food served, and this completes an really enjoyable event. Wine tasting tours can last hours, and if you attend organized tours – which is an extraordinary way to spend your vacation – you get to travel around from winery to winery and learn about new places that often amaze you with their beauty. You also meet new, open-minded people you can share your findings, thoughts, preferences and tastes with. Guided tours include everything already organized – your meals, the wine that go with the meals, your hotel rooms, transportation and lastly the wineries to visit for the tasting sessions. Dubrovnik offers all this, good mediterranean cuisine, great Dubrovnik hotels, impressive history and very good wine.
To attend a wine tasting tour you don`t need any knowledge as there are no requirements. Everybody can attend guided tours, and you learn everything you need to know. If you are a complete beginner, just look around and copy behavior of others. This includes sipping the wine slowly, keeping it in the mouth for a few seconds, moving it around all areas of your mouth and tongue, so that absolutely every taste sensor comes in touch with it. Some people also close their eyes and most of all try to get as much feedback from their sensors as possible – and then try to compare findings to what your guide is describing.
But wine tours are not only about wine tasting. Of course at the end of every tour you can buy wine that you liked, and for many people this is the start of their own private wine collection. Attending such wine tasting tours you also get to know a lot about the way the grapes are cultivated and collected, about local folklore, cuisine and finally how grapes get processed for the wine. The bottom line: making these tours you will have the best time ever. We venture to say that after you have returned from your first wine tasting tour, you will make a list of all places and countries you want to visit to continue your quest for good taste.
Dubrovnik is only one great and unforgettable experiance.

We have a quick overview for you of some typical, additional travel expenses and also some tips how to save money on them:
By the way, if you are looking for unforgettable and amazing place to spend your vacation at, we recommend Dubrovnik in Croatia.

* Budget flights – there are numerous of low budget flights available online, and if you can book your flights separately from accommodation you can save a lot of money sometimes. This is especially true if you can start to organize your vacation on time so you can book a few months in advance. Companies like the famous low budget airline Ryanair will only charge you the tax on the flight. Or one more possibility to save money is to be flexible enough to take advantage of last minute offers.
* Insurance – most agencies include travel and medical insurance as part of the total costs, but you can get that much cheaper if you organise your insurance separately. Numerous building societies offer travel insurance which are cheaper as part of their current account benefits. A lot of people already have private medical insurance plans that cover travelling abroad. So take a few minutes, check all of your existing policies and see what they cover. If travelling abroad is not a part of your insurance see what deals are available for topping up your insurance before you go somewhere else where it might be more expensive. Research these insurances carefully to be sure that good deals give you all the cover you may need.
* Ren-a-car – many rental companies only accept credit card payments, so maybe it will be a good idea to book and pay for your rental in advance. Then pay the balance off your credit card bill as soon as possible so you can avoid extra payings. If you book in advance you will also get the type of car you want. This is better than getting something larger/smaller than you need because it was the only thing left.
Renting a car is a very good idea if you decide to visit beautiful places like Dubrovnik because its surroundings are also worthy to be visited.
* Exchanging Money – you are right when you think that traveller’s cheques are one of the safest ways of carrying money around on holiday, but they are not the cheapest. So you can save money by looking around for good deals..
* Leaving the airport – taking a taxi from the airport to your hotel can be very expensive, and to get one can also take a long time in busy cities. It is definitly a better idea to book and pay for all the transport you need to and from the airport or ferry port or train station.

That”s it…we hope this will help you to save some money. Have a good time and enjoy your vacation in Dubrovnik at its great hotels .

Travel Rules

Do you like to travel to amazing destinations like Dubrovnik ? The easiest way to reach these destinations is to travel by air. When did you flew the last time? Was it within the last year? Or how about within the last month? Even if you did, there is a really good chance that things have changed since the last time you have been at the airport. You may be thinking about the airport layout now, but it is in fact the air travel rules that have probably changed. As more security issues arise, often on a weekly or even a daily basis, the airlines decide to enforce new travel rules. In the case that these new enforcements come into effect, do you know where and how to find out what they are?

All Air Travel Rules
Before you are going to familiarize yourself with new air travel rules, if there are any, you will want to understand the advantages of learning those rules. Unfortunately, so many travelers are worried about having the due forms of identification that they forget to worry about the items that they pack. If you are one of those travelers, there is a very good chance that you may, unwittingly, pack items that are interdicted and won`t get through the airport security checkpoints. Depending on the interdicted item, you may be required to make additional payment, discard the item, or turn it over to the airport security.

In addition to interdicted items, there are also some new air travel rules that belong to security screening procedures. One example: all air travelers are now required to remove their shoes on the security checkpoint to scan your shoes along with the rest of your carry-on luggage. It may pose an inconvenience for you but it is a requirement. Refusing to comply with this requirement, as well as with others, may lead to you being expeled by airport security or local authorities. Then you will not only miss your flight, you may even face prosecution for your actions. Whatever, all of this can be prevented by knowing and understanding the new air travel rules, as well as the old ones, so you can enjoy your trip and your vacation in Dubrovnik for example.

Travel Rules
Where can you familiarize yourself with air travel rules? The best way to do it is to go directly to the source. That source is the organization that makes and basically enforces those rules, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). You can get valuable information from the TSA about all air travel rules, by directly contacting them or by visiting their online website. We recommend you to check this online website. You will see that there is a large amount of information that you need to know.
Searching the words “new air travel rules” you will be provided with a number of different results. Those results are filled with information for air travel, including all rules that are enforced aboard all airplanes or at all airports. To avoid travel-problems it is important to keep your source of information in mind. But be careful, numerous websites with inaccurate, misleading, outdated information can be found online.
So have a great time by being well-informed and enjoy your stay at beautiful
Dubrovnik hotels in the beautiful city Dubrovnik.

It is a place where people want to see and want to be seen. It is a place where the rich and beautiful ones come to get some tan and some others come to see them doing what they do. But there are also people who just want to enjoy the beauty of the beach and the view.
The beach is located just in front of the eastern entrance (Ploce Gate) to the Old City. The luxury neighboring hotels as well as the historical Lazareti, a quarantine from 15th to 18th century, guarantee a special environment.
The beach is so exclusive that it even has it’s own reception, stylish restaurant, caffe bar just above the level of the beach, filled with modernistic white, low, benches and curved couches, deck chair and sun umbrellas rentals, luxurious baldachins rentals and a great water-sport offer.
The great and well known Eastwest Beach Club is situated on this beach, which is visited by famous stars, international sportsmen, artists who are visiting Dubrovnik and daily visitors of this special place. A must-see place.

Hope you will have a good time at one of Croatia’s amazing places: Dubrovnik at one of its great hotels .
