In recent years Dubrovnik has become a very popular host of famous artistry and cultural events. After the successful exhibit of Faberge eggs in the Rector’s Palace last year, there will be an exhibit of graphics in the Gallery of Art by Pablo Picasso this summer. The opening of the exhibit is expected to be on 8th July, two days before the beginning of the 59th Dubrovnik Summer Festival and it should last until 28th September.
The exhibit will consist of three representative series of Picasso’s graphics: Suite Vollard, La Tauromaquia and Suite 156.
Two years ago the value of the collection was estimated at almost 1,1 million euros.

Suite Vollard, is esteemed as the most important graphics series of the 20th century, and it was completed between 1930 and 1937. 89 of 100 works will be on display in Dubrovnik. Picasso drew the inspiration for its passionate scenes filled with an erotic atmosphere, from his romantic connection at that time with Marie-Therese Walter.

La Tauromaquia, completed in1957, is frequently compared with the graphics of Picasso’s countryman Francisco de Goya.26 graphics in aquatint depicting bullfights, a hallmark of Spanish culture.

Suite 156:the graphics appeared in the last years of Picasso’s life and represent a kind of “graphics testament”. Twenty works will be exhibited in Dubrovnik.
